Jerez de la Frontera or Jerez is a city within the metropolis and province of Cádiz, in Andalusia the southernmost region of Spain. With a population of 215,000 in 2024, it’s best known for sherry, horse-breeding and flamenco dancing.

This area has been settled since prehistory but was thinly populated until the Umayyad Moors arrived in the 8th century AD. They called it Sherish and introduced distillation, which makes possible sherry and spirits. They were supplanted by the Almohads, who built the citadel. The cities of Andalusia were the last parts of Moorish Spain to fall to Christian control and were described as de la Frontera – on the frontier, with Jerez falling in the 1260s. Medieval Jerez had industries based on agriculture and from the 16th century benefited from trade with the Americas – it’s 11 km from the sea but the river was made navigable.
Walk, the main sights are in a compact area. Consorcio de Transportes Bahía de Cádiz operate local buses in this area, including airport buses 050 and 053. A dozen taxi firms ply through town and wait at the railway station. Don't use a car in city centre, the old streets are barely wide enough for a moped. There's a dozen parking lots around city centre, well signposted. There isn't a park-and-ride scheme.

Citadel built by the Abbadid Moors in the 11th century, re-built by the Almohads in the 12th and converted into a Christian stronghold from 1261. The complex includes a mosque (converted into a church, with the minaret becoming a bell tower), Arab baths, several towers, gardens, cloistered patios, the Palacio Villavicencio, and a camera obscura. Adult €5. (updated Sep 2026) Alameda Vieja is the plaza just south of Alcázar. Plaza del Arenal is the modern square just north of Alcázar.
Theatre: Teatro Villamarte is the city’s principal performance space, at Plaza Romero Martínez 20. Sala Compañía is a small theatre in a converted church on Plaza Compañía. La Gotera de Lazotea is a puppet theatre at Molino de Viento 7. Flamenco dancing shows are staged at several locations. You want a small venue where it’s as if the performers are having a love-spat in a corner cafe, close enough that you smell their hormones.

Jerez has lots of good wine from other regions of Spain, but local vineyards are geared towards sherry, with sweet dessert wines as a side product. Sherry takes its name from Jerez, and is a fortified wine of 15-17% alcohol. It’s a protected name that may only be applied when produced by approved methods within the region bounded by Sanlúcar de Barrameda on the coast, El Puerto de Santa María to the south, and Jerez itself. (In 1933 this “sherry triangle” was the first to be recognised when the Spanish denominations were established.) The wine is made from white grapes (usually Palomino), with fermentation taking it to 12% alcohol.
Beware traffic, safeguard valuables and stay clear of low-life, same as anywhere else. The tourist areas are bustling and safe at all hours, but Jerez has high unemployment and opportunistic crime, often drug-related. There are rough neighbourhoods to the south and east where you have no reason to go.
